Cultural Rapprochement

Syria is host to a new exhibition, coming straight from the V&A in London.
Abu Dhabi might have the Guggenheim, Doha has its Islamic Museum and Damascus has…an exhibition, coming straight from the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

The V&A managed quite a coup, as it's the first time a European museum brings its artwork to Syria. The show, entitled “World Ceramics” will be the closing event for Damascus, Cultural Capital of the Arab world.

Joseph Faloughi Opening

Lebanese painter Joseph Faloughi  - a cross between Nicholas de Stael and Claude Monet, shows his colorful abstract paintings at Surface Libre gallery.

Show opening is tonight 7pm to 9pm.

LAST DAY: My Place in Between

British artist Alys Williams and Lebanese artist Nathalie Harb create a multimedia installation that evolved from ideas of their home cities, London and Beirut, and communicates uneasiness with the concept of home and its fragility. A storage space is created with packed boxes and furniture left, either forgotten or ready to be moved, by a central character. The viewer is invited to wander and investigate the space. Memories and clues to past events are expressed through videos, models and texts embedded in the furniture.

Shashat's 4th Women Film Festival

Shashat’s 4th Women’s Film Festival will take place from November 1 – December 7, with a major film tour in Palestinian universities and cultural centers in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, which includes 59 screenings, so as to promote film viewing and women’s cinema among the largest number of Palestinians, especially youth.  Shashat’s Ramallah screenings will take place at the Ramallah Cultural Palace.

Fashion Project

The Fashion Project INSIGHT OUT is a creative textile workshop led by Susanne Kuemper, a renowned fashion design professor from Germany.

The project consists of two workshops and a final presentation of the results. In the first creativity workshop (from 04-10 to 18-10-2008) participants developed their own themes, derived from various inspirational sources such as literature, paintings, music, photographs, materials, etc.

In the second implementation workshop (from 28-10-2008 to 12-11-2008), outfits are tailored and finalized.

Pablo Picasso in Dance: Part One

Between 1917 and 1962, Picasso was involved in creating the designs for nine ballets including Parade, Pulcinella and L'Après-midi d'un Faune, in collaboration with such artists as Jean Cocteau, Erik Satie, Igor Stravinsky, Claude Debussy, Léonide Massine and Vaslav Nijinsky. Two historical Ballets: Le Train Bleu dates from 1924 and Le Tricorne from 1919, can be considered as the highlight of this period, shall be presented by HaRaKa in its new program.
