Historically Correct

Of Turkish and Afghani heritage, Nilufer Tarzi Kuran is one of Turkey’s most successful jewelers. With regular features in magazines, including Town and Country and ELLE Middle East and outlets in Cairo’s Beyman and Dubai’s Harvey Nichols, Nilufer seems to know what she’s doing.

How did you start designing jewelry?
I started working in the jewelry business seven years ago.

Vintage Beauties

Old is beautiful with Tarfa Itani's vintage jewelry
It was a sandy afternoon with a light orange atmosphere covering Kuwait’s horizon. I was invited to the opening of a Lebanese designer and artist at the Karizma boutique. With no great expectations, I made it to the show in the late afternoon.
And boy was I right to drag my lazy self.

Thoughtful Gold

There's no bling bling here, just spirituality and good taste.
You might have thought you were a spiritual kinda gal, but wait until you meet Zeina Tahan. This Lebanese jewelry designer has redefined the concept of spirituality to encompass not only your life, but also the jewelry you wear.

Descending from a long line of jewelers from Tripoli in north Lebanon, Tahan has worked hard to branch out on her own. What makes her different is not only the intricacy of her jewelry – which, at times looks like a piece of embroidery – but the message that comes with each piece.

Azza Fahmy

Since her collaboration with Bristish designer Julien Macdonald, Egyptian jeweller Azza Fahmy is everywhere. She's recently published a book on traditional Egyptian jewelry and has also started a school to train craftmen and designers in jewelry design. Her brand – Azza Fahmy Jewelry (AFJ) – which employs 300 people, is often cited as the example to follow, with outlets across the Middle East, a soon to be store in London and a solid international reputation.

Design Savvy

What is it with design and the Middle East these days? In Dubai, the new design store Traffic is a hub to exchange all kinds of creative ideas around design and architecture. In Beirut, the new store “Over the Counter” is a three floor ode to industrial design. If that was not enough, a great show has just opened, again in Beirut, simply entitled ECHO, which records the conscious flirting between art and design.
