Huda Smitshuijzen Abifares

Huda's last name might be hard to pronounce, but the design guru - she's got degrees from Yale and the Rhode Island School of Design - is doing a lot to bridge the gap between Arabic and Western languages, through the Khatt Foundation, which she created a few years ago. Credited with reviving the art of typography in the Middle East, and making it relevant to today's world, Huda is quite literally creating new fonts for the Arabic language. The stuff you see everywhere everyday, but seldom ever notice. Now you will.

One very cool competition

carole July 28th 2008

Sometimes, I wish I was a graphic designer - especially in times like this, when I receive news about the Khatt Foundation and Mosaic's "Mulsaq" competition - a wall sticker competition aimed at promoting  graphic designers from the Arab world as well as helping to develop an original visual language specific to the region, whether it be with new Arabic typos or images.

The Best of Middle East Design

Thanks to Rami Farook’ energetic endeavours, through Traffic, his Dubai gallery, the Middle East now has its very own design competition. Started this year, the aim was to uncover talent in the region, aided by a world class jury. The contest was open to anyone with a link to the region. In total, 110 entries from across the globe, including Cairo, Beirut, and Tehran and of course Dubai, ran for a chance to win in one of three categories: decorative object, lounge chair and interior design for a concept store. Two weeks ago, after a lot of suspense, the winners were finally disclosed:

Decorative object; Rita Nader, Beirut: ‘Flash beam’
Rita, a Beirut based student wowed the judges with her exciting and forward-thinking design for this lighting system. ‘Flashbeam’ is a light fixture glowing through layers of polycarbonate; a light pillar that creates reflection of light from ice crystal plates with horizontal parallel surfaces. The shape is a typical oriental pattern; the object of an archetypal mousharabieh.

Lounge chair; Fadi Sarieddine, Dubai: ‘Dubai Syndrome’

Six minutes and forty seconds to save the world

Two days to go before Pecha Kucha resumes its third edition at Dubai's hip Third Line Gallery.

If you sat down and calculated how many minutes worth of talking you produced a day, it would add up to a whole lot. But when it comes to addressing a crowd (think stage fright, sweaty palms and the prospect of a sudden 'loss for words' episode) six minutes and forty seconds can drag on and seem like an awful lot of time.

If you've got the chops (or at least, a creative idea), then Pecha Kucha is the place for you.
