Culture,
Alia al Senussi, 10 Nov 2009
Frieze week was surprisingly busy and seemed to breathe a new sense of excitement (and renewed hope!) to everyone around.  The museum shows went a long way to invigorating people's faith in the future of the art world (excuse my overstatement but it really is true!!!).  Ed Ruscha at the Hayward was fabulous, John Baldessari at Tate Modern awe-inspiring, Anish Kapoor at the Royal Academy delightful and the Museum of Everything fascinating!

An International Style Icon

In the last few years a generation of style icons has been emerging from the region and leaving their mark on the international fashion scene. Not simply content with being fashion consumers, such women are increasingly taking on an active role within the fashion industry, inspiring designers and sharing opinions with fashion editors. This recent phenomenon has had the unlikely affect of creating a bridge between the West and Middle East.
This may be fashion, with all its inherent frivolity, yet this new generation of women is using the broad-reaching power of fashion to debunk preconceived notions of Arab women and contemporary Middle Eastern culture.
