I've made a discovery about baby clothes, which, I am guessing, is one that all first-time moms make a little too late. It is this: Babies actually need far fewer outfits than you think when you are pregnant and caught in a crazy, hormonal, new-mom consumer frenzy.
It doesn't help that any item of clothing is irresistible when it's the size of your palm. Even if you happen to be wise or sane enough to realize this with your first-born, it's likely that your mother, siblings and best friends will not, and you will end up with a closet full of amazing, tiny clothes that your baby barely gets a chance to wear before he/she has outgrown them. Not to mention the fact that even designer outfits lose something when scrunched between baby and stroller, or baby and shoulder – which is the only way anyone will ever see them. Trust me, stock up on underwear and cute pajamas instead, of which you can never have enough. (Petit Bateau makes the best underwear, by far).
It's when they start moving on their own that it becomes really fun to dress them up. My SO*, like most other children I expect, still spends most of her days at home, climbing, falling, running, squatting, stretching, rolling and napping. For this, we have many, many pairs of comfy, cotton leggings, shorts and sweatpants. The best brands are by Scandinavian designers, who seem to understand that kids should dress like kids while they can! Admit it, you probably cannot pull off wearing leggings covered in rainbows or robots anymore, no matter how much you may love them.
For days out, we love to dress up, but Baby Burberry is just not our style, and must everything be in pink or blue!?? Definitely not, thank God. Next week, I'll talk about the best places in Beirut to track down cool, understated clothing for your little hipster.
