So, this past week, while on a business trip to Beirut, I went to the Blue Note Cafe in Ras Beirut for the first time. We arrived at the cafe a bit early, and started off the evening with a yummy Lebanese meal. A short while after stuffing ourselves, Charbel Rouhana, a musician I had never heard of, and 3 other talented musicians came on stage. I didn't really know what I was in for, but given my new found "ear" for world music I said, yalla, this should make for a lovely experience.
The first half was instrumental music - a beautiful Oud, mixed with jazz and oriental sounds. The second half had lyrics. And here, the music not only touched my spirit, but the lyrics hit my soul. There were two songs in particular, one which I have included below, which were very touching. Both songs talk about the importance of holding onto one's roots, the beauty of being from this region, and being proud and remembering who we are. This is something so important and so special, particularly at a time where politics makes no sense, economic markets are confusing and depressing, and life seems to be flying by.
This enchanting evening fit into my exploration of new music and revealed the continuous talent and creativity emerging from the Middle East.
