The Fashion Godfather

Tala Tayara June 2nd 2008

The Godfather of Ready to Wear, Yves Saint Laurent has sadly passed away. As you may probably be gathering from my recent blogs- i am a self confessed fashion victim and while I love the edgy, urban collections that the noughties are famous for, the Classics and the 80's are what really do it for me.

Yves Saint Laurent is a true Fashion God, an icon and now a legend. The man is credited with taking fashion off the unattainable pedestal and putting it on the streets. As a fashion disciple, you would know that fashion is not merely clothes but a visual reprensentation of what is happening culturally, sociologically and politically around us and Yves Saint Laurent is the epitome of that ideal.

He morphed haute couture into the more accessible ready-to-wear that immediately revolutionized the fashion industry. More famously, one of his best-known creations is 'le smoking', a ladies jacket and pants, became a symbol for the emerging women’s movement. Basically he made it OK for us to wear trousers and God love him for it! He started off his powerhouse career at Dior with the man himself and at 22 he was heading the company and steering it away from financial ruin. He started his own YSL label and his ready to wear line RIVE GAUCHE is still very much a symbol of class and elegance with its own boutiques around the world. His pantsuits, see through blouses, Beatnik chic and safari styles propelled him onto the circuit and guaranteed his staying power.

He was truly an artist in his creations and while he didn't think fashion was art- he did quote that it needed an artist to steer it. He changed the silhouette of the 20th century woman and elevated fashion to an art form and an industry to be reckoned with. One of my favourite quotes from him is: "to feel beautiful, all a woman needs is a black jumper, a black skirt and the arm of the man she loves." A tribute.
